Following the release of the 2023–2024 Academic Calendar by the Ghana Education Service, the ministry disclosed that the date for the 2024 BECE will be in July. This means candidates in Junior High School 3 will now sit the basic school-leaving examination in July 2024.
The GES and WAEC have yet to provide an official date for starting and ending the examination in July. The BECE is never written beyond the second week of the month in which it is written. It is projected that the BECE will be written from Monday, July 8th, to Friday, July 12th, 2024.
Which subjects will be covered during the 2024 BECE?
In the last decade, eight subjects have been administered to BECE candidates. However, in 2024, candidates are most likely to write 10 subjects at the BECE. This means candidates are more likely to write two subjects a day from Monday to Friday. However, schools that do not offer French would end up taking only nine subjects.
If candidates will be tested in 10 subjects in 2024, it will be good if GES and WAEC consider starting the examination on a Wednesday instead of a Monday. This will allow candidates to write six subjects (Wednesday to Friday), then break for the weekend and sit the remaining four subjects on Monday and Tuesday. This will offer candidates two rest days during the weekend.
Curriculum To Be Used For The 2024 BECE
Although the 2024 examination will be the 34th edition, it will be the first to be administered to candidates based on the new curriculum introduced in 2019.
The candidates for the 2024 BECE will also be the first set of students to be assessed with the new curriculum. When they are finally enrolled in the SHS, they will also be the first batch to start using the new SHS curriculum.

2024 BECE Grading System
A nine-point numerical scale is used in grading the candidates, with Grade 1 denoting the highest performance and Grade 9 the lowest. This, along with the raw score system, will play a crucial role in the placement of students into Senior High Schools.
