The end of the second term is at hand and soon schools will close for the term 2 vacations that will usher in the 3rd term of the 2022/2023 academic year.
Per the GES calendar for the academic year,
Friday, March 24, 2023, was the end of the term of the 2023 academic year.
The 2nd term of the 2022/2023 academic year ends on June 15, 2023.
3rd Term Reopening Date for Basic Schools in Ghana
Schools will reopen to start and complete the third term of the 2022/2023 academic year on 27th June 2023.
Thus, schools will break for learners and teachers for a period of 11 days.
The 3rd term of the academic year will commence on 27th June 2023. Schools will be in session until 17th September 2023 when the school year ends.
This year is an important year for the GES because it will begin the new academic year in October.
This will usher the academic calendar back into its original state. It will surely alter the month in which the 2024 BECE and WASSCE will be conducted by WAEC as well.
What this means is parents and guardians will have to buy new textbooks and other school supplies again in the year.
Schools would have to ensure that, booklists are prepared early enough and issued to parents on or before vacation day so that parents can buy these supplies within the 11 vacation days.
The students will indirectly be promoted to the next class at the end of the 3rd term.
This will be the first time in Ghana that students are promoted twice to new classes in the same year.
In the last three years, there have been frantic efforts toward returning to the original academic calendar, which starts in September and ends in July.
Thus, the first term of the 2023/2024 academic year will end in December 2023. This has led to shorter vacation periods for school children and parents as well.
Teachers who were accessing further studies during vacations have had to face nearly no vacation holidays due to the shorter nature of vacations, which were also unpredictable.
From October 2023, teachers and learners will see a change and an increase in their vacation periods, and parents will also see their children staying in school more in terms of days than it has been in recent times.
The main benefit of this is that it will usher the academic year calendar back into its original form, which was used prior to COVID-19.
