Want to know how to calculate your GPA and FGPA at the University of Ghana? Here is a quick guide on how to calculate University of Ghana GPA and FGPA.
The University of Ghana, UG Legon, has established a grading system to rank students graduating from the university this academic year. This system assigns students to one of three degree classes: first class, second class (upper and lower division), or pass.
In this guide, we will demonstrate the University of Ghana, UG Legon grading system, as well as how to calculate your Final Grade Point Average (FGPA) and determine your class of degree.
University of Ghana Grading System
The University assigns letter grades and numerical weightings to those grades. The numerical weightings reflect the performance quality. Total numerical weightings reflect performance quality. A student’s performance in a course is graded as follows:
| MARKS | GRADE | CREDIT POINT | INTERPRETATION |
| 80 – 100 | A | 4.0 | Outstanding |
| 75 – 79 | B+ | 3.5 | Very Good |
| 70 – 74 | B | 3.0 | Good |
| 65 – 69 | C+ | 2.5 | Fairly Good |
| 60 – 64 | C | 2.0 | Average |
| 55 -59 | D+ | 1.5 | Below Average |
| 50 – 54 | D | 1.0 | Marginal Pass |
| 45-49 | E | 0.5 | Unsatisfactory |
| 0-44 | F | 0 | Fail |

Grade Interpretation Grade Point
X Fail 0
Z Disqualification 0
I Incomplete 0
Y Continuing 0
FGPA – How To Calculate
This tutorial will walk you through the process of calculating your Final Grade Point Average (FGPA).
Terminologies in the Official Transcript from UG
- CCT– Cumulative Credits Taken
- CCP– Cumulative Credits Passed
- GPA– Grade Point Average
- FGPA– Final Grade Point Average
- GPT– Grade Point
CCT CALCULATION
This is the total number of credit hours earned in courses taken.
It is typically based on course codes rather than course titles.
It is only computed once.
CALCULATION OF CCP
This is the total number of credit hours earned from completed courses.
Grades E and F are not included in the list of passed grades.
Grades A through D are computed here.
How To Calculate GPA
| Code | Credit | Grade | GPT |
| PHCL101 | 3 | C+ | 7.50 |
| SOCI121 | 3 | B | 9.00 |
| SREL111 | 3 | B+ | 10.50 |
| UGRC120 | 3 | A | 12.00 |
| UGRC140 | 3 | B+ | 10.50 |
Total GPT=49.5
• Total Credits= 15
• GPA= 49.5/15
GPA= 3.3
Calculation of GPA
This is for the total number of semesters a student has taken university examinations • All levels carry equal weight • CGPA= Total GPTs of all courses taken/ Total Number of Credits of all courses taken GPTs and Credits will be calculated from L100 first and second semesters, L200 first and second semesters, L300 first and second semesters, and L400 first and second semesters, assuming you took an examination in Level 400 second semester.
How To Calculate Your FGPA
The GPAs for the various levels are recalculated, all courses are calculated at the appropriate levels, and the number of retakes for each course is counted. The course will appear three times with its respective credits and GPTs, assuming that a student took UGRC120 in Level 100 and received a grade of F, took it again in Level 200 and received an E, and took it once more in Level 300 and received an A.
The levels are then each given a weighting of 1:1:2:2. Accordingly, L100 equals 1, L200 equals 1, L300 equals 2, and L400 equals 2.
Assuming the recalculation results in the following GPAs for the various levels:
L100- 3.20
L200- 3.60
L300- 2.90
L400- 3.00
Our FGPA will be calculated as below:
L100
3.20× 1/6= 0.53
L200
3.60 × 1/6= 0.60
L300
2.90 × 2/6= 0.96
L400
3.00 × 2/6= 1.00
FGPA= 0.53 + 0.60 + 0.96 + 1.00
= 3.09
Class: Second Class (Honours) Upper Division
UNIVERSITY OF GHANA DEGREE CLASSIFICATION
- First Class – 3.60 – 4.00
- Second Class (Upper Division) – 3.00 – 3.59
- Second Class (Lower Division) – 2.00 – 2.99
- Third Class – 1.50 – 1.99
- Pass -1.00 – 1.49
