Every year, nearly all BECE graduates want to be admitted into Category A schools, but the reality is that there are just 54 such schools out of the 1200 SHSs in the country.
The limited number means increased competition amongst students for admission into the limited number of such schools.
Getting placed in one of these 54 Category A schools requires students to score very high raw scores and aggregates.
It is often possible for students with very good grades and raw scores not to be placed in one of these schools, all because, others who chose the school performed better.
Candidates and parents should note that it is not compulsory to choose one of these schools.
These schools are in this category based on facilities they have not, and not due to their academic performance at the WASSCE.
Again, students are required per the rules for selecting schools to choose just one of these schools.
If a candidate decides to choose a Category A school, he or she must place the school on the list of choices as the first choice.
Again, where the Category A school has a blend of Day and Boarding, the school will often be placed in the compulsory Category D list where students can choose it as a Day School Option.
Since the introduction of the Double Track System, it has indirectly increased enrollment numbers in such schools. Thus, the schools can enroll up to twice the capacity. This in itself means that more students can gain admission to these schools, but this in itself does not solve the issue of huge numbers seeking to enroll because the number of students entering SHS has also gone up since 2017 due to the Free SHS policy.
Finally, students who are not making raw scores between 400 and 600 are advised not to consider these schools and instead start choosing schools from Category B.
Parents should not insist that their wards should enroll in these schools when the candidate does not have the academic strength to compete with other brilliant candidates across the country for the limited spaces in the 5
schools.
