Do you know Ghana will start a centralized university admission form system? Do you know the benefits?
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced that from next week, a centralized application system for prospective university students will be made available. This new admission system is likely to reduce the cost of admission for applicants.
The current practice, where students have to buy the same forms from different universities, is not the best. For instance, a student who wants to target admission into one of his or her four preferred universities will currently have to purchase the demission form for each of the universities.
The introduction of the centralized university admission form system will ensure that Ghanaian universities stop earning undeserved incomes from applicants.
When rolled out, students are likely to apply to a maximum number of universities but pay for admission forms only once.
This system will also ensure that the same applicant does not gain admission into more than one university . This way, more admission slots will be available to many more qualified students. Currently, it is possible for the same student to apply for admission in multiple schools and gain admission into more than one. This will be a thing of the past.
At a ceremony, Professor Ahmed Jinapor, the Director-General of GTEC, said that the Centralized Application Processing System (CAPS) would replace the current system, in which prospective students would have to purchase various forms to apply to different universities.
The new centralized university admission form system will be piloted in 11 public and private institutions.
Which universities will pilot the centralized university admission form system?
The universities that will pilot the new admission system are
- Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)
- Kumasi Technical University
- Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Development
- Christian Service University
- Garden City University
- Catholic University of Ghana
- Bolgatanga Technical University
- Bolgatanga Polytechnic
- C.K. Tedem University of Technology and Applied Sciences
- the Presbyterian University, Ghana,
- the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies.
“We want to have a situation whereby we would have a platform for all institutions in the country, of all their programmes, such that if you want to apply to the University of Ghana, KNUST, or Ashesi, all you need to do is go onto the platform, buy a form, and apply to each of them,” he added.

According to the GTEC Director, the commission hopes to begin full implementation beginning in the next school year.
They will be able to market themselves when this platform is released, he continued.
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) remarked, “It is not only happening here in Ghana; when you go to the UK, they have such a system.”
That’s what you’ll find when you travel through much of Europe,” he remarked.
