What Does It Entail?

The TOEFL exam was first given in the United States in 1964. Many institutions have come to accept it as their official English proficiency tool over time.

While the TOEFL exam is available in both internet-based (TOEFL iBT) and paper-based formats, 98% of TOEFL test takers worldwide prefer the TOEFL iBT test due to its convenience and ease of administration. TOEFL is accepted in the following countries:

  • The United States of America
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • The United Kingdom
  • And many other institutions across Europe and Asia

These exams are held up to 50 times per year, and students can choose to take them at any time. However, you may only take the exam once every three days. Remember that you must pay the fee each time you register for a test.

Pattern Of TOEFL

TOEFL Exams

The TOEFL syllabus consists of 4 major sections

Reading
Listening
Speaking
Writing

Reading

The reading section of the test consists of three to four multiple-focus passages (compare/contrast, cause-effect). Each passage contains ten questions.

Depending on the number of passages in the test, the time allotted to this section can range between 54 and 72 minutes. This section of the test has a possible score range of 0 to 30.

Listening

This section contains three to four lectures, and some of the lectures include classroom discussions. Each lecture lasts about 3-5 minutes, and you will be asked 6 questions at the end. This section also includes normal, everyday conversations.

You’ll be able to listen to 2-3 three-minute conversations. At the end of each conversation, you will be asked 5 questions. The accents used in the listening section are native speakers from across North America. Aside from North American accents, you may hear accents from other English-speaking countries such as:

  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • The United Kingdom

The total time allotted to this section can range from 41 to 57 minutes, and the score for this section of the test ranges from 0 to 30.

Speaking

This section of the exam consists of four tasks. You will be given one independent task to express your thoughts on a topic you are familiar with. You’ll have 30 seconds to think of a response. You will also have three integrated speaking tasks based on reading and listening.

You will have one minute to prepare a response. This section has a total time limit of 17 minutes. You’ll be graded on a scale of 0 to 4, and your points will be converted to a scale of 0 to 30.

Writing

This section of the test will consist of two tasks.

Section 1 consists of an integrated task based on what has been read and heard. You have 20 minutes to finish this.
Section 2- An independent task to support a point of view on a subject. You have 30 minutes to finish this.

This section will take 50 minutes in total, and you will be graded on a point scale of 0 to 5, which will then be converted to a score scale of 0 to 30.
