The registration, which was to end on April 28, 2023, was extended to June 7, 2023.

The statement by WAEC in a blog post read ““WAEC wishes to inform the general public that the closing date for registration of candidates for the Basic Education Certificate for Private Candidates 2023 has been extended to Wednesday, June 7, 2023”

Until 2022, WAEC organized a separate exam for Private Candidate. In 2023 Private candidates will sit the same exam with their school counterparts from 7th to 11th August 2023.

A private BECE candidate is anyone who falls into one of the following categories.

Re-sitters – These are Previous School candidates of the BECE who failed on one or more subjects and were not admitted into SHS. Such candidates need their previous BECE candidate index number to register for the examination.

First-timers – These are candidates who are at least 16 years and are writing the exam as private candidates. Such candidates often may not be school candidates.

The fees for the 2023 Examination for Private candidates as charged by WAEC are

4 subjects+ = GH¢119.48
3 subjects = GH¢109.03
2 subjects = GH¢ 99.46
1 subject = GH¢ 88.14

Candidates who are yet to register for the examination as private BECE candidates are advised to use the grace period to register. To register for the 2023 BECE as a private candidate go to the registration portal.

Both school and private candidates must pass the BECE to stand the chance of been placed in any of the over 900 Public Second Cycle schools. Note that very often BECE candidates who fail to make at worst grade 8 in Mathematics or Integrated Science do not placed in any of their choices. Such students do not also get the chance to use the self placement module. This means candidates need to take their revisions serious and work on their core subjects.

The grades obtained by every student in all four core subjects will always be considered in arriving at their final aggregate, as well as their raw scores. The lower the values, the better for the candidate.

In a related development, 2023 BECE candidates and schools need to take their BECE preparations extra serious. Publications such as 2023 BECE Social Studies Super Mock 1 Questions For Only Serious Schools provide candidates and schools with extra revision materials to aid their preparation.

For candidates who are struggling with preparing for the 2023 BECE, it is recommended that they read How to pass 2023 BECE when no one gives you a dog’s chance
