2023/2024 Terms and Academic Year Calendar (Basic and SHS)

Effective 3rd October 2023, schools across Ghana will start the 2023/2024 Terms and Academic Year Calendar. The new school year has been structured to ensure, Ghana returns to the normal school year which was practised prior to Covid-19.

What are the key dates for the 2023/2024 Terms and Academic Year Calendar for Basic Schools?

The first term of the new academic year reopens on 3rd October 2023. Schools are expected to vacate in December 2023 for the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Term two is projected to start on 9th January 2023 and end on 11th April 2024

The third term of the 2023/2024 Academic Year will start on 7th May 2024. Schools will be expected to go on long vacation on 25th July 2024.

What is the 2023/2024 Terms and Academic Year Calendar for Senior High Schools?

Most schools are currently on vacation but the 2022/2023 academic year of all SHSs in Ghana will come to an end on 30th November 2023 SHS 1 students in double-track schools.

The Ghana Education Service is yet to announce the academic calendar for SHS.

All stakeholders are waiting for the official 2023/2024 academic year calendar for both basic and secondary schools.

The Ghana Education Service is doing everything possible to restore the old academic calendar. Due to this, the academic calendar for both basic schools and senior high schools will end early this year.

This will help the Ghana Education Service restore the old academic year, whereby the academic starts in September or October each year. It is believed the SHS academic year will also be restored back to normal next year.

The new academic calendar will also lead to changes in the Months in which BECE and WASSCE examinations are conducted by WAEC for school-registered candidates. The BECE is expected to be written in June 2024.

In the coming days, the GES is expected to release the official academic calendar to help stakeholders plan their activities in various schools.
